JOAN MIRÓ / ALEXANDER CALDER: SPACE IN MOTION
The work of Joan Miró and Alexander Calder has often been the subject of exhibitions featuring works by both artists. Calder's mobiles, stabiles and wall or base sculptures, when placed in close proximity, seem to activate the inherent spatial qualities of Miró's paintings. Similarly, Miró's image-based universe, with its signs and schematic notes of figures, explores, in two dimensions, many of the suggestions found in Calder's sculptures. Together, the works of Miró and Calder represent two of the 20th century's most important achievements in the fields of painting and sculpture, each opening up new formal paths that were subsequently explored by artists in Europe, America and Japan over the ensuing decades.
