Repeats day 4 again from 10:00 to 20:00
Hope Hippo, one of Allora & Calzadilla's most iconic performance sculptures, subverts the idea of the historical monument and, in particular, the equestrian statues of Venice. Instead of a war horse, the artists summon its monstrous etymological relative, the Hippo or "river horse". In contrast to the noble and enduring materials of classical sculpture, such as bronze and marble, this creature comes to life in a substance that is haunted by decay, river mud, thereby rendering its existence finite and vulnerable. Hope Hippo raises a debate on the relationship between civilisation and barbarism.
